Make a New Home Card with Denim Scraps
/Make a cute new home card with tiny scraps and offcuts of denim.
Here is a fun and easy way to make a cute new home greeting card using up tiny scraps of denim, perfect if you are like me and like to craft with old jeans.
To make a Denim House New Home Card you will need:
A blank greeting card and envelope
Scraps of denim, ideally 2 different shades
Scrap of a cotton print fabric
A PVA glue
Sharp scissors to cut fabric
Plus some way to add a sentiment - you could use something like:
Alphabet stamps and ink
Print onto card on a computer and cut out, plus foam pads (that’s what I’ve used here)
Sentiment stamp and ink
Alphabet or sentiment stickers
Prepare the denim house
Cut a rectangle of denim 2.5” x 2” (6.25cm x 5cm)
Fold it in half and cut a small half heart shape centrally on the fold.
Cut a piece of your cotton print about 2” x 1.5” (5cm x 4cm). It needs to be big enough to cover the heart but smaller than the denim rectangle.
Place the denim on your work surface, wrong side up and apply a little pva glue around the heart. Don’t blob the glue too thickly, you just want a light even covering. Lay the print fabric over the heart cut out face down, press lightly and leave to dry.
Cutting the roof piece
Cut a 2.25” square of denim (6cm) then cut this in half diagonally.
This gives you 2 roof pieces, you only need one for your card of course so maybe it’s a good idea to make these cards in pairs! One for now and one to keep for the next time you have a friend who moves home.
Assembling the card
Lay your house pieces and sentiment on the card blank before you glue anything down, make sure you are happy with the arrangement and everything fits nicely. (years of card making experience and I boo booed on my first attempt and didn’t have room for my roof! Luckily I make these mistakes so you don’t have to :-D)
When you are happy, apply a little glue to the back of the denim rectangle and fix it to the card centrally. Apply glue to the back of the denim triangle and fix that above. Press them lightly and leave to dry.
Now add your sentiment
I printed the message I wanted to use onto card, cut it out and then attached it using foam pads.
Don’t forget to save the denim heart you cut out at the beginning if you want to add a little something extra. You can glue it inside the card or even on the envelope.
More New Home greeting card sentiment ideas
You can stamp a sentiment if you have a suitable rubber stamp or acrylic stamp and ink pad.
If you don’t have foam pads or want a thinner card for posting you can print and cut out a sentiment and just fix it to your card with glue.
Why not personalise your card with a name, address or both? If you have a set of alphabet stamps or are printing your own sentiment you can personalise you card with something like “The Shermans at No.42” or “The Dursleys at No.12” .
If you have alphabet die cuts you could cut a message and add that for a different look.
Anyone with nice handwriting or who enjoys calligraphy can just write their sentiment on.
SO many options!
Tips when glueing fabric to card
Don’t apply too much glue, a light smear is plenty. If you don’t have a fine nozzle on your glue like I do then consider blobing a little out onto an old plastic container or lid and applying it with a brush to get a thin coating. The denim is quite substantial so the risk of glue seeping through is less but if the glue does come through to the other side it can ruin the look so avoid that by being careful with the adhesive application.
Fabric alternatives to denim
If you want to make your houses with a different fabric then something like a thicker wool, felt, tweed or canvas will also work well. You want to be using a fabric that is thick enough so the glue does not seep through.
If you REALLY want to make a house with a thinner fabric then I’d highly recommend applying a thick iron on interfacing to the back of the fabric first, that way you’ll be able to glue the house to the card without issue.
