An Interview with Polymer Clay Artist Wendy Varner

I love the way the internet can connect us. Over the years I’ve had the pleasure of connecting with talented makers from all over the world. Often these days we can feel very isolated or feel that the internet is a place full of disinformation and division but it really can be a place for coming together, sharing our experiences and finding connections.

I’ve been chatting with talented polymer clay artist Wendy Varner over in the US about her love of crafts and the beautiful things she makes. Polymer clay is not something I’ve every tried but after seeing Wendy’s lovely creations I’m tempted to add it to the list (or maybe just treat myself to some beautiful earrings)!

Hi Wendy, you make such beautiful polymer clay earrings, when did you first discover polymer clay crafting?

Thank you so much! My parents have always been crafty. I remember years ago my dad gave me a book on polymer clay art. At that time I was so busy with other things, raising a family and all, that I put it on the shelf. I love books and knew that one day I would revisit it. I guess I just didn't realize at the time the versatility of polymer clay. Fast forward to a couple of years ago. My daughter started making polymer clay earrings and was blowing up on Instagram. I was working on fine tuning my watercolor painting technique at the time. I was getting a lot of commission work. Then I really started paying attention to what she was doing and it looked SO FUN that I just had to get in on the action! I bought some clay and tools. You know I have to have ALL the tools. I dove right in and immediately got hooked.

What inspires you?

What DOESN'T inspire me??? LOL. I get inspired by nature, texture, color and other makers on Instagram and Pinterest. I save posts on Instagram and Pinterest so that when I'm ready to create something new, I have an easy reference. I always put my own twist on it and am successful most of the time. I have so many ideas but a limited amount of time to see all of my ideas through to completion. I was recently inspired by what other makers were doing with alcohol ink on baked clay and started dabbling and experimenting with it and was stunned with the results!

Do you enjoy any other crafts?

Yes! Sewing and watercolor are my favorite but I also know how to knit and crochet. But working with polymer clay is definitely the most versatile medium I've ever worked with so it's on the top of my list.  I also love creating basic hoop earrings. Who doesn't love a nice hoop right??? I currently create two different styles of hoops in round and the classic oval. These are available in three different sizes in over 25 colors to choose from.

What is your favourite thing about running your own business?

The creation process is my favorite thing. I love creating art that other people actually want to wear. I call it wearable art. I love meeting people face to face when I do pop ups where I can see their reaction to my style and see what they love and what they are looking for. Sometimes they give me suggestions and I love that I can say, "Yes, I can make that for you!"

Do you have a favourite piece you've ever made? What do you love about it?

I love making 3D floral designs. I love all things floral and love the process of mixing just the right colors for the flowers and leaves. I especially love working with brides to create their timeless bridal bouquet keepsake earrings. The bride will provide me with photos of their bridal bouquet and I will create a unique one-of-a-kind pair of earrings that is an exact replica of her bouquet that she can wear for years to come.

What's next for Wendy Varner Designs? Do you have any exciting plans for the future?

I plan to offer in-person clay earring making classes in the future along with 1:1 consulting online teaching others how to be successful with selling handcrafted jewelry.

Thanks so much to Wendy for taking the time to chat and show some of her lovely work. I absolutely love the idea of those wedding bouquet earrings, such a wonderful keepsake.
