How to make a Felt Cactus Bookmark

Here’s a quick and easy summer craft that is fun for adults but easy enough for kids to make too. A felt cactus bookmark.

The kids could make their own bookmarks ready for a summer holiday reading project maybe. I don’t know about you but I always had a pile of books ready to read in the summer break when I was little and so did my kids when they were small. These days I put by a few good books through the year ready to take away on holiday with me, sitting in the shade by the pool with a good book is one of my favourite ways to relax. I do know a lot of people have moved to e-readers now but for me you still can’t beat an actual book in your hands.

All you need to make your own felt cactus book mark is:

  • Small pieces of felt, including 2 shades of green plus some other bright colours. A felt pack like this one is ideal if you don’t already have off cuts of felt in your stash

  • A Tacky PVA Glue, I used Hi Tack

  • This pattern

  • Sharp scissors

  • A brush for the glue

Download the pattern, print and cut out your pattern pieces.

Then cut them out from your felt. The small pieces are a bit fiddly to cut out so some small sharp embroidery scissors are best.

Use the brush to paint a thin layer of the Tacky PVA glue on the felt and glue the pieces together. You want enough glue to cover the felt but not so much that it soaks right through.

Glue the smaller green cactus to the base shape first, then the pot, then finally the flowers and their yellow middles.

Leave it all to dry, I put a heavy book on mine to press the layers together until it was dry.

That’s it! Your book mark is finished!

You don’t have to use this felt cactus as a book mark of course. You could glue or sew it to a notebook or pencil case as decoration or glue a line of them around a lamp shade maybe. I’m sure there are lots more things that would be fabulous when decorated with a felt cactus too, do you have any more brilliant ideas?
