Photo Greeting Card with Earrings Gift Idea

I made a photo greeting card for a friend recently when I gave her earrings for her birthday. It came out as a fun idea but as she probably doesn't want her photo plastered all over this website I've remade it with a photo of me to share with you!

This card making tutorial was originally published in 2014 and has been updated and republished.

If you have a pair of earrings to give to a friend why not make them a personal greeting card and combine the two into one fun gift idea.

How to make a Photo Birthday Card with Earrings Gift

You will need:

  • A blank card and envelope

  • A computer and printer

  • Photo printer paper

  • A pin or safety pin

  • Earrings

You need to start with a digital photo of your earring recipient. Ideally you want a photo that's face on and with their ears showing. Something fairly flattering would probably be a good idea too!

This photo of me is a few years old now but it fulfils all the requirements - I’m facing forwards and my hair is up which reveals my ears. I would have liked to get rid of the guy behind me in this picture but I don't have the skills to achieve that so he has to stay.

Changing the look of your photo

You can use the photo just as it is but I had a lot of fun playing with mine and trying out some arty effects. There are lots of different ways you can manipulate the photo you’ve chosen until you get something you are happy with. Let me show you what I tried and the results to give you some ideas.

When I first made this card I used a website called Snapstouch but that doesn’t seem to be around any more. I also tried Cartoonize.net which is similar and still available but it doesn’t seem to have any free options any more.

If I were making this card again today I would use IPiccy. It’s very simple to use and has plenty of options to try without needing to upgrade to a paid option.

You simply upload your picture then choose one of their options to change it.

The options I’m sharing below are all found if you click the magic wand on the left side, you then scroll down to find all the options. I’ve just tried a few to give you some ideas:

Retro Comic

Posterize

Pencil Sketch

Half Tone

I'm sure there are LOADS more possibilities out hopefully these will give you some ideas.

Turn your photo into a greeting card

When you are happy with your photo simply print it on nice photo printer paper, trim to size and glue to your card blank.

Put a piece of blue tack under the ears and use a pin or needle to make a hole. (This just makes sure you don't stab yourself or crease the card, read more about this tip here: Make a hole in velum or card without creasing)

Pop the earrings through the holes and your card and gift in one is complete.

Easy and fun.

If you need to post your card and gift I would recommend popping it into a padded envelope to protect the earrings.

I can imagine this idea would work well for hair clips too, maybe even a necklace.

This is a really easy way to make a totally unique greeting card. The hardest part is finding a suitable photo, after that it really is easy peasy.
